Hello friends, today I have come with a very delicious side dish – Mashed Swede with English Mustard. In this recipe, boiled Swede is cooked in Butter or cooking Oil with Mustard and fresh Cilantros. It has a very rich and creamy texture. It is one of the oldest and widely popular winter recipes.
In this recipe, first, I have cut- peeled the Swede and washed them. Then I have pressure cooked them in salted water. You can also use a large pan instead of pressure cooker. In fact, you can prepare it in oven too. But it will take a little longer to get cooked. After that, I have mashed the root vegetable and have then cooked it.
It is a very simple and easy recipe. The best part is, it needs very few common ingredients to prepare this dish and it gets prepared within half an hour without any hassle. In this preparation, I always go heavy with Mustard. So, instead of wholegrain Mustard, I always use English Mustard. English mustard has a strong flavour and tangy taste and it goes amazing with Swede.
I love the combination of Mustard and green Chillies. It together gives a refreshing and unique aroma. I don’t prefer more chilli hot taste and so, I have broken a whole green Chilli and added it just for flavour. After cooking I always discard the Chillies. If you prefer more chilli hot preparation, then you can use finely chopped Chillies too.
I am a vegetable lover and specially have soft corner for root vegetables like Potatoes, Beetroots, Carrots etc. But I was not familiar with swede before coming to London. I never had this kind of root mash preparation before coming here. But I loved the preparation when I first had it. It has a very smooth, rich texture with the flavour of Mustard. It is a pure Vegan dish and will be a treat for my all Vegan friends. When I have prepared this dish for the first time, my family was delighted. Now they ask me to prepare the dish at least once in a week.
I have added some herbs in this preparation. I have added chopped Cilantros for flavouring. It enhances the taste and flavour of the dish. You must try it once to believe me. I have added it at the end of cooking so that it doesn’t get overcooked. I have used Olive oil to prepare this vegetable root mash. You can use any cooking oil to prepare this dish.
Mashed Swede with English Mustard is an excellent and very versatile side dish. You can pair up it with many things. It can go very well with Salmon, roasted vegetables, Lamb or Chicken. In fact, you can prepare delicious Pies with this root mash. You can also have it as a dip with crispy Tacos and Nachos. It is a very healthy dish and can be an excellent addition to your regular diet.
Swede is full of zinc, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and manganese which are very important for bone tissue. It is low in sodium and helps in reducing blood pressure. It boosts our immunity system. Regular consumption of Swede can reduce our many health risks.
