About the recipe

Christmas is the occasion to celebrate with family, friends, relatives and close ones. Rather than cooking or engaging yourself in the kitchen for long, there are so many other fun activities to be done during these days. I always prefer to spend minimal time in the kitchen during these festive days to be part of the crowd and get engaged in most of the conversation and enjoyment. But surely without compromising the feast and showing good gestures to the close ones.

Chocolate puff pastry always takes a special place in the Christmas dessert table. This Nutella Christmas tree goes exactly with the theme of Christmas and it will surely be a real treat to the chocolate lovers.

This Christmas puff pastry recipe gets prepared within 30 minutes. This tempting chocolate puff pastry recipe could be a perfect homemade Christmas gift for your closed ones which would easily bring smiles to their faces. Just pack it nicely on a tray and all set. Isn’t it smart and sweet??

Nutella Christmas tree with puff pastry is a perfect breakfast or snack recipe which can be a great companion with a cup of coffee. It is an utterly easy-to-make recipe which does not require any cooking skill. In fact, it could be a fun activity to prepare with kids under elders’ observation. My little one loves to help me to spread the Nutella over the pastry sheet and to twist the branches of the tree. You can engage your complete family to do this fun work.

This stunning Nutella Christmas tree with puff pastry is prepared with only 5 simple ingredients and most importantly it does not require any fancy equipment. All the ingredients are easily available in any supermarket. It is a perfect sweet bite for a Christmas party or festival.

Ingredients of Nutella Christmas tree with puff pastry

Pastry puff sheet: The primary ingredient of the recipe. I have used a readymade pastry puff sheet to prepare the recipe. I always prefer to do shortcuts and effective jobs in the kitchen during the festive season. If you prefer homemade pastry puff dough then please go for it.

Nutella spread: Another vital ingredient of the recipe which adds a sweet taste and chocolaty flavour to the puff pastry.

Chocolate chips: I have used milk chocolate chips for the recipe but you can use any variety of chocolate chips like white chocolate or dark chocolate chips.

Egg yolk: It is used to brush the pastry puff before putting it into the oven. It gives a nice outer colour to the pastry puff.

Confection sugar: It gives a bright, snowy and festive look to the Christmas puff pastry.

Variation in Christmas puff pastry

There are myriad variations that can be done in the Christmas puff pastry recipe. Different varieties of spread and toppings can be added to the recipe.

For spread, you can use any variety of jam, or chocolate ganache for the recipe. In fact, if you are a white chocolate fan then you can replace the Nutella spread with any white chocolate spread and make it completely different. For a bite and to enhance the taste, you can even add desiccated coconut, and chopped nuts other than choco chips.

For the topping, you can use confection sugar for a snowy look. Other than this, you can use Christmas sparkles, cinnamon sugar, m & m etc for a more attractive look.

Nutella Christmas tree with puff pastry with step-by-step photos and instructions have been provided in the ‘Instructions’ section of the recipe. If you follow the steps precisely then you will get your desired Christmas puff pastry recipe. I have included all the tips and tricks to make the recipe easier for you.

Tips to prepare perfect Christmas puff pastry
  • Roll the puff pastry sheet once for better finishing.
  • If you find it difficult to spread the Nutella then warm it slightly in the microwave before spreading.
  • The addition of chocolate chips gives a more chocolaty taste and texture to the puff. Try not to skip it.
  • Twist the pastry dough delicately. Your hands may turn messy but nothing to worry about.
  • Don’t forget to brush the Christmas tree with egg yolk before putting it into the oven. It gives a nice hue.

How to make Nutella Christmas tree?

To prepare the Nutella Christmas tree, first gather all the ingredients and make them handy.

Then take out the puff pastry sheet and cut it into halves. Spread it over a butter paper-lined baking tray. Roll it once all over with a rolling pin.. Now, cut the pastry sheet like a Christmas tree shape with a knife. Be careful not to cut through the parchment paper. Take out the unwanted portion of the pastry sheet.

Now spread the Nutella spread all over the pastry sheet. If you find it difficult to spread it on the sheet then warm the Nutella spread slightly in the microwave before use. Then sprinkle some chocolate chips on it.

Then very carefully place another half of the rolled pastry puff sheet on it. Carefully trace the chocolate-covered Christmas tree. Then again cut out the extended portion of the pastry sheet and make the same shape of a Christmas tree. Pull off the extended portion of the pastry sheet.

Now, lightly make two lines in the middle of the Christmas tree to form a tree trunk. Using the trunk as a navigator, cut the branches of the tree into both sides of the triangle.

Twist the branches from the bottom and try to make two turns on the lower sides. Twist each branch in the same direction. Continue to move up and reach the top of the tree.

Cut one star with the excess pastry sheet and put some Nutella spread at the centre. Place another excess pastry on the star. Trace the ends and cut the star out with a knife. Place the star on the top of the tree.

Now brush the whole Christmas tree with the beaten egg yolk.

In the meantime, preheat the oven for 10 minutes 350°F/180°C/160°C Fan

Place the baking tray at the middle of the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Take out the baking tray and allow it to cool off for 5 minutes.

Then sprinkle some icing sugar on the top. Now the Nutella Christmas tree is ready to serve.
