Asian prawn recipes are renowned for their bold flavours and amazing taste. This garlic prawns Chinese recipe is garlicky flavoured, mildly hot & sweet in taste. The crispy fried marinated prawns are cooked with chopped garlic, ginger, spring onions and chilli flakes along with a sauce mixture prepared with chilli paste, soya sauce, vinegar, brown sugar and water. The fleshy and juicy prawns with a crispy coating dunked in spicy sauces are a real treat to anybody who is fond of Asian prawns recipe.
Asian chilli garlic prawns is a full-proof recipe and nothing can go wrong with it if a few things are taken care of properly. The biggest complaint among everyone during the time of cooking shrimp is that it turns rubbery and hard. The main reason behind it is that prawns get cooked very fast and overcooking turns the prawns rubbery. Though you might get tempted to cook the prawns a little longer but you have to control yourself and turn off the flame.

Ingredients for Asian chilli garlic prawns
Prawns: The primary ingredient of the recipe which provides body to the dish.
Garlic: Another important ingredient which provides flavour, texture and taste to the dish.
Ginger & spring onion: The addition of ginger and spring onion adds taste and flavour to the dish.
Chilli flakes: It gives a nice heaty taste to the dish.
Sesame: I added sesame at the final stage of cooking. It induces a nice aroma to the dish.
Sauce mixture: I have used soya sauce, vinegar, chilli paste, brown sugar and water to make the mixture.
Corn flour: Corn flour is added to marinate the prawns.
Salt: The most necessary ingredient for any savoury item. The addition of salt provides a salty taste to the dish.
Oil: You can use any flavourless oil or sesame oil for the recipe.

Tips to prepare perfect Asian chilli garlic prawns
- First, cut and clean the prawns. Cut the head and devein them. Rinse them in water.
- Prawns get cooked very quickly. So don’t overcook them or else they will turn hard and rubbery.
- Marinate the prawn with salt and corn flour for at least 10 minutes so the prawns can absorb the salt. Or else they will be tasteless.
- Fry each side of the prawns only for 30-40 seconds and not more than that.
- Don’t skip sesame from the recipe. It induces a nice aroma to the dish.
How to make Asian chilli garlic prawns?
To prepare the Asian chilli garlic prawns, first, wash the prawns properly and add salt, corn flour and mix it properly so each prawn gets coated properly. Keep the prawns aside for 15 minutes.
For the sauce mixtures, take a bowl and add red chilli paste, soya sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, water and mix all the ingredients thoroughly. Keep the bowl aside.
Then put a pan on flame and allow it to become completely dry. Add oil and wait until it’s hot. Once the oil is hot, turn the flame to low and add the prawns to the pan. Fry each side for 30-40 seconds but not more than that. Strain the prawns and keep them aside on a plate.
In the same pan, add the chopped garlic, chopped ginger and mix it well. Cook it over medium flame for a minute until the raw smell goes away.
Then add chilli flakes and give a stir. Add spring onion whites and cook it over medium flame for 20-30 seconds.
Then add the sauce mixture into the pan and give a stir. Add salt and mix it well. Turn the flame high and allow the mixture to boil.
Once the gravy starts boiling, turn the flame low and add the prawns into it. Simmer the prawn into the gravy for 2 minutes.
At the final stage, add spring onion greens, sesame seeds and mix them well. Then switch off the flame. The Asian chilli garlic prawns is ready to serve now.

1 cup = 250 ml
To marinate the prawn
- 400 grams Prawns
- ½ teaspoon Salt
- 1 tablespoon Corn flour
For the sauce mixture
- 1½ tablespoons Red chilli paste
- 1 tablespoon Soya sauce
- 1 tablespoon Vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Brown sugar
- ½ cup Water
Other ingredients
- 2 green onion stalks
- 1½ tablespoons Garlic, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon Ginger, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon Chilli flakes
- 1 teaspoon Sesame
- 2 tablespoons Oil
Instructions:
- First, clean 400 grams of prawns. Cut the head and devein them. Rinse the prawns nicely and transfer them to a mixing bowl.
- Add ½ teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoon corn flour and mix it well. Cover the bowl with a plate and keep it aside for 15 minutes.
- In the meantime, take a bowl and add 1½ tablespoons red chilli paste, 1 tablespoon soya sauce, 1 tablespoon vinegar, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, ½ cup water and mix all the ingredients thoroughly. Keep the bowl aside.
- Now put a pan on flame and allow it to become completely dry. Then add 2 tablespoons of oil to the pan.
- Once the oil is hot, add the marinated prawns (Step 2) to the pan and fry them on low flame for 30-40 seconds on each side. Don’t over-fry the prawns or else they will become rubbery. Keep them aside on a separate plate.
