I came to know about Hasselback Potato recipe only when I came to London. Its gorgeous golden look attracted me towards it and involved me to know more about the dish. Then I have decided to prepare this amazing dish in my kitchen. Whenever I prepare Hasselback Potatoes with Garlic, our home smells divine. The combination of butter and garlic is speechless, and the smell can make everyone hungry in the house. Even my daughter is very happy when it comes to potato recipe baked.
When I was in India, I always had Potatoes as a side like curries or fries or chips but never as a principal food. In the sub continents of Asia, Rice, Wheat etc. is used as staple food. But after coming to the UK, my point of view has quite largely changed about this root vegetable. I got amazed by seeing the importance of Potatoes in regular diet. Not only in the UK, Potatoes are staple food of many western countries.
Garlic Butter Hasselback Potatoes are very special to me because I started my Hasselback journey with this supreme dish. And one more thing that makes it special is that I never got a single leftover piece since the day I started preparing this dish. The Potatoes are so luscious that I can assure that no one can stop themselves to devour the second number.

It is a Potato recipe easy where potatoes are thinly sliced but not cut fully to be singles. So, the Potatoes do not lose its original shape and then they are seasoned and topped with spices before going into the oven for baking.
Hasselback Potatoes was first invented in Sweden in a restaurant named Hasselbacken. From there, the dish is named as Hasselback Potatoes.

How to choose Potatoes for Hasselback?
Many people get confused while selecting Potatoes for Hasselback. But according to me, there is no hard and fast rule to prepare it. Only one thing that must be taken care of is to always make sure that the Potatoes are fresh and healthy.
It really does not matter whether Potatoes are red or yellow, small or large.
But still, Yokon gold, Russet, Red bliss, Jersey royals, Maris Pipers etc. are the finest potatoes for Hasselback.
How to slice Hasselback Potatoes?
This is the most important part of the recipe. The whole dish depends on it. Perfect slices result perfect Hasselback Potatoes.
For Hasselback, Potatoes are thinly sliced but not cut fully to be single piece. It is always cut around 80% from the top before touching the chopping board or end edge of the potatoes. There are many hacks for perfectly slice the potatoes.
- You can use Hasselback cutter. This is the easiest way to slice them.
- You can place the potato on a wooden spoon and then slice it. Whenever the knife will touch the spoon, it will stop there, and potatoes will not get cut all through.
- You can use chopsticks too instead of wooden spoon. Place the potato in between two chopsticks and slice them. Whenever the knife will touch the chopstick, it will stop, and potatoes will not get cut all through similar to the wooden spoon technique.
- If you are confident then just cut them carefully with observation. Just stop before touching the base. It may be difficult for the first time, but practice makes people perfect.
Each slice of the potatoes should not be too thick and must be even for the best texture. I have sliced them 2 mm to 3 mm thick.
How to make Hasselback Potatoes?
For this Potato recipe, first I have washed them nicely and pat dried them with kitchen towels. Then I have sliced them.
I have used melted Butter for brushing the Potatoes. I have brushed them thoroughly all around before putting them into the oven. When they are halfway done you would again need to brush them with Butter.
I have used fresh sliced Garlic for the flavouring of the dish. I have thin sliced the Garlic and inserted the thin pieces in each slice of the Potatoes. Trust me it flavours great.
I have used Salt and Pepper for seasoning the Potatoes. Whenever it comes to Potatoes, I don’t feel shy to add some salt in it. For me, Potatoes taste good, but addition of salt makes it taste great.

Ingredients:
- 4 medium Potatoes
- 4-5 cloves of Garlic
- Crushed Black pepper for seasoning
- Salt to taste
- 2-3 tablespoons melted Butter
Instructions:
- Switch on the oven and preheat to 200°C/180°C Fan or Gas 6.
- Line the baking tray with aluminium foil or wax paper, whichever you prefer.
- On the other hand, wash the Potatoes properly.
- Then pat dry them with kitchen towel or kitchen tissues.
Note: Before slicing make sure there is no moisture on the Potatoes.
- Slice them about 2-3 mm thickness but not although.
- Place them on a plate and brush the melted Butter on the Potatoes.
- Insert the Garlic slices in each slices of the Potatoes carefully.
- Place them on the baking tray.
- Sprinkle crushed Black Pepper on the Potatoes.
- Sprinkle some salt on the potatoes.
- Place the baking tray on the bottom shelf of the preheated oven.
- Bake it for 45-50 minutes.
- After 25 minutes take the baking tray out of the oven.
- Brush some more Butter on the Potatoes. At this point, the potato slices get spread out. Pour some butter inside each slice of the Potatoes.
- Put the tray back in to the oven and bake it until the skin of the Potatoes become crispy.
- After 20 minutes, with the help of a fork, check one of the Potatoes whether it is done or not.
- If it is done switch off the oven and take the tray out or else bake it for few more minutes.
Serving Instruction
Transfer the Hasselback Potatoes with Garlic on a serving plate. Serve immediately to enjoy the crispy edges of the Potatoes. Serve hot or warm with any of your favourite sides and enjoy your gorgeous meal.
