Festive season is on and Durga puja, Navratri, Lakshmi puja, Karwa Chauth, Diwali, Bhai Dooj are the upcoming events for the Indians. During any festive season, there are thousands of household works like cleaning and decorating house, shopping gifts and new clothes for family members etc. In this busy schedule, it is quite difficult to spend much time in kitchen. Today, I have come up with a quick and Indian snack recipe easy which is a perfect fit for pro festive season.
Chana chaat recipe is known by different names in the different parts of India. In few places like Punjab, it is popular as chole chaat recipe. In few places, it is called chana chaat masala because of its spicy taste. Other than these, it is also known as chickpea chaat or chana chaat salad.
Chana chaat recipe is one of the asset recipes for Indian street food which is prepared and sold by the street vendors in every corner of north India. There are different ranges of chana chaat recipes that are prepared in the cart of street vendors like aloo chana chaat, aloo tikki chana chaat, paneer tikki chana chaat, papdi chana chaat and many more other than simple chana chaat recipe with yogurt.
According to me, chana chaat recipe is one of the most popular homemade Indian street food because of its effortless preparation. The best part of the recipe is that there is no fixed rule to prepare this healthy slobbering Indian snack recipe. You can prepare it with whatever you have in your kitchen pantry and you can even adjust the taste of the chaat recipe by adjusting the amount of chutneys and spices.
Chana chaat recipe is a very simple and easy recipe which requires very basic ingredients to get prepare. The difficulty level of preparing this dish is very low. You just need to boil the chickpeas and potatoes. Rest of the part of the recipe is an uncooked process. The best part of the recipe is that you can prepare it in huge quantity using same effort and time. So, it could be a great option for small parties and family get togethers.
In chana chaat recipe, two different types of chutneys are used – Green chutney and sweet tamarind chutney. I always prepare the chutneys one day before preparing the chana chaat and refrigerate them. It makes the recipe handy during the time of preparing it. Sometimes, I even boil the chickpeas the previous day and refrigerate them when I run out of time.

Can I use canned chickpea for the recipe?
Yes, of course. You can use it. It will not change the taste or texture of the chana chaat masala. After opening the can, just discard the water and rinse it once before you. Whenever I am in hurry, I use canned chickpeas and its reliable.

How to make vegan chana chaat recipe?
Just skip yogurt from the recipe and instead of that squeeze some lemon juice into the chana chaat recipe. Your chaat recipe will become vegan friendly.

How to make chana chaat masala?
To prepare the chana chaat recipe, first I have washed the chickpeas and soaked them in enough water for 8 hours. I prefer to soak it for overnight. Then drain the water and wash it once again. Pressure cook the chickpeas in salted water for up to 2-3 whistles and then allow it to release its pressure. Then drain the chickpea and keep it aside for the recipe.
After this, I have cut the onions, cucumber, tomatoes, coriander leaves, boiled potato before preparing the chana chaat recipe.
To prepare any Chaat recipe, it is very important to assemble all the ingredients before you start plating.
First, take boiled chickpeas in a bowl. Then sprinkle some Black salt, Chaat masala, Red chilli powder, black pepper powder, Roasted Cumin Powder on it and mix them evenly with the a spoon. The combination of all these spices give a perfect flavour to the chaat recipe.
Then drizzle Imli ki chatni and green chatni on the chickpeas and mix it nicely. Both the chutneys are equally important for the flavour and taste of the recipe.
Add boiled potato chunks, chopped tomatoes, onion and cucumber into the bowl and mix them nicely. Cucumber pieces give a nice bite to the chana chaat recipe.
Drizzle yogurt and some more chutneys over the top the chickpeas. These elements remove the dryness of the dish and makes it yummier.
Then sprinkle generous amount of nylon sev, chopped coriander leaves and pomegranate over the top and your lip smacking chana chaat is ready to serve. Coriander leaves give a refreshing flavour to the dish and pomegranate seeds give a ting of sweetness along with a bite.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup boiled Chickpea
  • ¼ cup boiled Potato, medium diced
  • ¼ cup Tomato, deseeded and chopped
  • ¼ cup Cucumber, small diced
  • ¼ cup Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Pomegranate seeds
  • 2 tablespoons Coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup Yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 ½ tablespoons green Chutney
  • 3 tablespoons sweet Tamarind Chutney
  • ¼ cup Sev
  • ½ teaspoon red Chilli powder
  • ½ teaspoon Chaat masala
  • ½ teaspoon roasted Cumin powder
  • ½ teaspoon black Pepper powder
  • ½ teaspoon black Salt

Instructions:
  1. First wash the chickpeas nicely.

  2. Add enough water and soak the chickpeas for overnight or 8-10 hours. I added 2½ cups of water for 1 cup chickpeas.

  3. Rinse the chickpeas once more and transfer them into a cooker.
  4. Add 2 cups of water, 1 teaspoon salt into the cooker and give a nice stir.

  5. Close the lid of the cooker and cook it in medium flame till 2-3 whistles.
  6. Switch off the flame and allow the pressure to settle down.

  7. Drain the water from the boiled chickpeas and keep them aside.
  8. Take a bowl and add ¼ cup yogurt and 1 teaspoon sugar into it. Beat the yogurt nicely and keep it aside.
  9. Take a large bowl to prepare the chana chaat and add 1 cup boiled chickpeas into it.

  10. Add ½ teaspoon of each spice Red chilli powder, Black salt, Chaat masala, roasted cumin powder and black pepper powder into the bowl one by one.

  11. Stir all the ground spices with the help of a spoon and coat the chickpeas evenly.

  12. Drizzle 1 tablespoon green chutney, 2 tablespoons sweet tamarind chutney into the bowl and give a nice mix.

  13. Add boiled potato, cucumber, tomato, onion into the bowl and mix them nicely.

  14. Drizzle ¼ cup of whipped yogurt mix (Step 8) over the chana chaat.

  15. Drizzle ½ tablespoon green chutney and 1 tablespoon tamarind chutney into the bowl.

  16. Sprinkle ¼ cup of sev over the top of the chutneys.

  17. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons coriander leaves, 1 tablespoon pomegranate seeds on the top. The chana chaat is ready to serve.


Serving Instruction
Serve the Chana chaat recipe immediately after preparing. Enjoy the heathy salivating snack with your family and friends with lots of gossips.
