Why it is named as mango mastani?
Nobody claims the exact reason of the naming the mango drink as mango mastani but most of the people in pune believe that the drink is named after the peshwa of Maratha empire Bajirao’s true love and second wife ‘Mastani’.
In history, it is mentioned that mastani was a very beautiful and brave women who was skilled in art, literature and war skills.
When I went for the local tour of Pune with my husband, I visited a place named Shaniwar wada where Mastani used to live. In that palace’s north-east corner, there was a place called Mastani mahal.
I heard a story about the beauty of ‘Mastani’ from a local tourist guide that she was so fair and beautiful that when she used to chew pan (Stuffed Betel leaf) and the red juice which comes out of it would be seen going down her throat in a streak during the time of swallowing. May be the drink is named so because it is visually so beautiful.

Mango mastani ingredients
Mango: The primary ingredient of the mastani cold drink which adds flavour, taste and colour to it. If you don’t have fresh mango then don’t hesitate to use frozen mango chunks or canned mango pulp.
Full cream milk: It helps all the ingredients to get blended to form a thick and smooth milkshake recipe.
Ice cream: Another most important ingredient of the mango mastani recipe which provides richness to the milkshake and provides chilled creamy touch to the drink.
Sugar: It adds the required sweetness to the milkshake. Adjust the amount accordingly.
Chopped nuts: It provides flavour and bite to the mastani drink.

Tips to prepare perfect mango mastani
- To prepare perfect mango mastani recipe, always use sweeter mangoes that have less fibre. The sweeter mangoes help to use less sweetener and less fibre gives better texture to the ice cream. Alphonso, kesar, beganapalli etc. are few sweet varieties of mangoes which work great for the recipe and other mango drink recipes.
- The most important thing to be taken care of while preparing the perfect mango mastani recipe is the correct proportion of mango pulp, ice cream and milk for the milkshake. If you want strong mango flavour, then increase the amount of mango pulp and if you want the mild taste of ice cream in the milkshake then increase the amount of ice cream. I personally like perfectly balanced flavour and taste of both.
- For mango mastani milkshake, we require very thick milkshake. So don’t add water or ice cubes into it. Addition of ice cream makes the milkshake chilled enough.
- Always use cold milk for the milkshake.
- For the addition of sweetness, you can use any sweetener like honey or maple syrup other than sugar for the recipe.
- Mango mastani is mostly prepared on some special occasions. So be generous during the time of adding chopped nuts. You can use your choice of dry fruits and nuts for the recipe.
- Always try to use light flavoured ice cream for the recipe, like vanilla which complements the flavour of mango. If you like to overpower the mango flavour, then you can use mango ice cream too for the mastani cold drink. Pista ice cream can also be used for a variation in the recipe.
- You can add toppings of your own choice on the top of the glass during the time of serving like fresh mango cubes, chopped nuts & dry fruits, tutti frutti, glace cherries etc.
