Coleslaw recipe is a traditional salad recipe which means cabbage salad. It is also referred as Cole slaw or simply slaw and sometimes as New England Salad. In this preparation, finely shredded cabbage is coated with salad dressing prepared with Mayonnaise or vinaigrette.

But in different countries, coleslaw recipe is prepared in myriad ways by using different varieties of vegetables, fruits, herbs, spices and salad dressing.

Classic coleslaw recipe is not a vegan friendly recipe because the primary ingredient for preparing the salad dressing is mayonnaise. Tahini coleslaw recipe is one of the easiest and delicious vegan variation of traditional coleslaw recipe. Now, many of you are not familiar with the fantastic dip ‘Tahini’. Well, allow me to explain it to you.


What is tahini?

Tahini is a smooth, thick, creamy and unique flavoured recipe prepared with sesame seeds. It is a versatile condiment which is basically used as a flavour inducer or flavour enhancer because of its nutty aroma. It is one of the most essential components of Mediterranean, middle eastern cuisine which is used to prepare myriad recipes.

Tahini recipe is basically sesame paste mostly prepared with hulled sesame seeds. But other varieties of sesame seeds which are easily available in the market like unhulled, sprouted, toasted, raw can also be used to prepare tahini of different flavour, texture, taste and colour. But the traditional tahini recipe is prepared with white hulled sesame seeds because it comes smoother in texture and with minimal or no bitterness. Now let’s go back to the coleslaw recipe without mayonnaise. Since ages, there are two big dividers present where one group loves coleslaw recipes crazily and another group which cannot stand coleslaw. Well each group has their own preferences.

I am obviously a big fan of coleslaw recipe easy and love to prepare it when bright, fresh and beautiful vegetables are easily available in the market. I always prefer to have a salad in my meal during summer because it gives me a fresh kick and I know many of you are on the same page with me. But previously due to health consciousness, I was not be able to have my favourite coleslaw on regular basis because we all know classic coleslaw contains large amount of mayonnaise in it.

One day, I was thinking to prepare a coleslaw recipe without mayonnaise, but at the same time, I was urging for the same creaminess. Then suddenly it clicked on my mind that nothing can be the better replacement of mayonnaise with tahini-lemon dressing.

Though I am a coleslaw lover but am quite specific about its dressing. According to me, a good coleslaw contains correct proportion of dressing with which each shredded veggie gets coated. It should have the perfect balance of tanginess and creaminess at the same time. This tahini slaw recipe could be a healthy and delicious addition to your regular diet. I am pretty sure it is never going to disappoint you with its extraordinary flavour.

This tahini coleslaw recipe aka tahini slaw recipe is a huge hit in my house. My husband and daughter just love it. Even though I prepare a big bowl of it in summer get-together, I always end up with empty bowl. Many of my friends are vegan and they just loved the concept and enjoy the tahini coleslaw thoroughly.

This tahini coleslaw recipe is an incredibly simple recipe which can be prepared very easily at home using very regular and easily available ingredients. The most time-consuming part of the recipe is to cut the vegetables evenly. Other than this, nothing can be easier than this salad recipe. But if you have a food processor in your kitchen then please go for it to make your job quicker and easier. Even you can prepare the slaw mixture 1-2 days before and keep it in the refrigerator in a zip lock bag. Just mix it with the dressing before serving.

First of all, remove the bruised outer leaves and cut them into quarters. Then remove the core and cut the quarters into thin shreds with knife.


Is there any shortcut to prepare coleslaw?

To save both your time and effort, you can buy bag of coleslaw mix from the market to prepare tahini coleslaw. Even if you have food processor then feel free to use it to cut vegetables evenly.


How to store tahini coleslaw?

This tahini slaw recipe can be stored in fridge in an airtight container for 2-3 days. After that, it loses its refreshing flavour, proper texture and taste.


Can I use sugar instead of maple syrup for the recipe?

Yes, you can. Just remember maple syrup is much sweeter than regular sugar. So, adjust the amount accordingly.


How to make coleslaw without mayo?

To prepare the tahini coleslaw recipe aka tahini slaw recipe, first wash the vegetables. I have used red cabbage, carrot and white onion for the recipe.

First shred the red cabbage and keep them aside. Then cut the carrots like thin matchsticks and keep them aside.

Cut the white onion into thin slices. You can even use red onion or green onion aka spring onion for the recipe. But I personally prefer white onion for the recipe.

Then transfer all the shredded veggies into a large mixing bowl.

If you have food processor then feel free to use it to cut vegetables evenly. It will save your time and effort both.

Now the next part of the recipe is to prepare the dressing for the tahini coleslaw recipe. To prepare the dressing, take a bowl and add tahini into it. Then add Dijon mustard, freshly squeezed lemon juice, maple syrup, salt, garlic powder, some crushed black pepper and mix it thoroughly.

If you don’t have garlic powder, then add a minced garlic clove instead of that.

Then pour the dressing over the shredded veggies and mix them thoroughly so the veggies get coated evenly. Now cover the bowl with a plate or parchment paper either in refrigerator or on kitchen counter for an hour. Serve chilled or at room temperature.

  • 2 medium Carrots, thin juliennes
  • 1 small white Onion, thin sliced

For the tahini dressing
  • 1/4 cup Tahini
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon Mustard
  • 1 Lemon, freshly squeezed juice
  • ½ tablespoon Maple syrup
  • ¼ teaspoon Garlic powder or 1 garlic clove minced

  1. First peel the veggies and wash them before cutting.
  2. Shred the red cabbage, cut the carrots to thin strips and thin slice the white onion and transfer them to a large mixing bowl.
  3. For the tahini dressing, take a bowl and add ¼ cup tahini into it. Then add 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, freshly squeezed lemon juice of one, ½ tablespoon maple syrup, salt, ¼ teaspoon garlic powder and ¼ teaspoon crushed black pepper, one by one into the bowl and mix it thoroughly.
