Tahini sauce is a rich, creamy, smooth, tangy and flavoured sauce recipe which is used as a staple in middle eastern cuisine. Its vegan, gluten free, easy to make and can be refrigerated. The basic tahini sauce recipe is the amalgamation of tahini paste, lemon juice, garlic, salt and some water. But myriad variation can be done by adding different elements into the dish for different taste, texture and flavour.
Though tahini sauce is very popular in middle east and few subcontinents in Asia and America, but many people are still not aware of the term ‘TAHINI’.
What is Tahini?
Tahini is a smooth, thick, creamy and unique flavoured recipe prepared with sesame seeds. It is a versatile condiment which is basically used as a flavour inducer or flavour enhancer because of its nutty aroma. It is one of the most essential components of Mediterranean and middle eastern cuisine which is used to prepare myriad recipes. But the limelight falls on the fact that it is an important ingredient for world-famous dip recipes hummus and baba ganoush. Tahini recipe is basically sesame paste mostly prepared with hulled sesame seeds. Difference between tahini and tahini sauce
Many people think tahini paste and tahini sauce are both the same. Though they are close to each other but are not the same.
Tahini paste is a thick paste of sesame seeds which can be diluted with oil. No extra flavour is added to it.
On the other hand, tahini sauce is a flavoured sauce prepared with tahini paste, lemon juice and other flavouring components like garlic, parsley etc.
Variation in tahini sauce recipe
Other than basic tahini sauce recipe, it can be prepared in different ways by adding different elements.
- If you like heaty taste into the sauce, then you can add little cayenne or other hot variety of pepper into the sauce.
- If you want some extra flavour of herbs then you can add herbs of your choice like finely chopped parsley, dill, coriander leaves or mint leaves (any of the one). In fact, you can blend the herb with the sauce to prepare green tahini sauce.
- If you like sweet taste in tahini sauce, then you can add maple syrup or sugar into it.

To prepare the tahini sauce recipe easy, first take a jar of a grinder or food processor. Then add tahini paste into it. Add peeled and sliced garlic cloves, cumin powder, salt, fresh lemon juice (strained), olive oil and some water into the jar. For some extra flavour and heaty taste, I have added black pepper powder into it. But it is completely optional. You can skip it.
Then close the lid of the jar and pulse it to a smooth paste. Adjust the amount of water according to your desired consistency for the sauce. Your tahini sauce lemon is ready to serve. Store it a clean dry container and refrigerate it.
