While I was in India, I was not aware with the term GUACAMOLE. In fact, I never even tried Avocados while I had been there. I have seen them in the exotic fruit section of supermarkets but never thought of picking them in my basket.
After coming to the UK, I have seen the huge popularity and availability of Avocadoes in supermarkets as well as vegetable shops. One day, I bought a Spicy Avocado-Chicken Wrap and I loved the creamy element of the wrap.
Then on the next day, I bought some Avocadoes from the store and decided to prepare something with this super buttery fruit. Since then I started my journey to prepare Guacamole. Till now, I have already prepared tons of recipes with this iconic dip. My family just loves Guacamole, and nothing can stop them to devour until the yum gets over.
How to prepare a perfect Guacamole?
- Always pick fresh ingredients and try to avoid frozen stuff.
- The most important factor is to choose appropriate Avocadoes for the dish.
- The proportion of adding Onions, Cilantros and Chilies should be balanced. Too much addition of these can spoil the taste and flavour of the dish.
- Always use fresh Lime juice. It gives a natural flavour to the dish.
- Don’t be shy to add seasonings according to your preferable taste. There is no hard and fast rule for adding seasonings.
Before jumping into the recipe, I would like to share few interesting tricks and tips to choose perfect Avocados and its health benefits with you.
How to choose Avocadoes for Guacamole?
- Always choose ripe and ready to eat Avocadoes for best results but make sure they are firm in texture.
- Press the Avocadoes with your finger and if you feel that it’s going inside too easily or is too soft from inside then it’s too ripe and can end up being mushy which we never want.
- If the Avocadoes are bright green in colour and the skin is too hard then those are not ready to eat.
- If you have enough time, then you can buy green raw Avocadoes and wrap them in paper for 1-2 days. They will be ready to use.
- The perfectly ripe and firm Avocadoes have dark skin colour than normal ones. If you press the skin and it yields pressure, then it’s perfect for use.
Health benefits of Avocadoes
- Avocados are full of good fats, nutrients and fibre.
- It is a good source of Potassium which helps to control blood pressure level.
- Avocadoes are great source of monounsaturated oleic acid which are extremely beneficial for our heart.
- Its fibre helps to reduce weight and great for our metabolism.
- Avocados are powerhouse of antioxidants which are boon for our eyesight.
In this preparation, I have used Onions, Tomatoes, chopped Cilantros, green Chilli and Lemon juice. Other than these, I have also used some seasonings to enhance the taste of the dish.
The Onions must be finely chopped in Guacamole. Big slices of Onions can produce sharp pungent flavour and dominate the dish.
The Tomatoes give a ting of sweetness and tanginess which goes amazing with the Avocados.
I have added freshly chopped Cilantros which gives a nice flavour to the dish with a mild bite.
I love the flavour of Garlic and according to me it goes great with the flavour of Guacamole. So, I have added a pinch of Garlic powder. Many people also prefer to add freshly chopped Garlic too in their Guacamole to make it more flavourful.
I have used freshly squeezed Lemon juice into the dish which produces a beautiful flavour.
I have used green Chillies to give a spicy hot kick to the dish. You can also add Jalapenos instead of green Chillies. But its completely optional. If you like to avoid chilli hot taste then ignore it.
I have used Salt and black Pepper as seasonings to the dish. According to me other spices don’t suit in Guacamole. Some of them might contain too flavourful elements to subdue the original flavour of the dish. Hence, too much players can ruin the game.
How to store Guacamole?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions, and everyone has their own scientific solutions. But according to me, its not worth to do all these tricks because it contains raw chopped elements which is obviously does not taste the same after refrigerating it. A fresh Guacamole tastes the best and nothing can replace it. But still there are many ways to store if in refrigerator.
Guacamole changes its colour after getting in contact with air. The change is visible. The Avocados get oxidized and changes its colour to brown. The outer layer turns brown when in contact with oxygen in air, but the inner surface will be perfect and protected. So, you can try some of the options as mentioned below.
- You can plastic wrap them or put it in an air tight container to protect from the air.
- Or else, you can add water after patting the Guacamole into the container. You can drain the water before use.
I have already shared many recipes with Avocados. You can check few of them like
